A coaster is an ordinary object. It lives on a table, absorbs the weight of cups, and gets picked up and put down dozens of times a day without a second thought. Each coaster is laser-engraved with a warm quote about pet loss — chosen from five, or written in your own words. Available in natural slate or cork. Coaster can be displayed flat as a coaster or propped upright with an optional basswood easel, so the quote stays visible on a shelf or windowsill without needing to be used. Made by hand in Calgary by Michelle and Evan — two people who understand, because they have two senior cats of their own and know the quiet weight of not knowing how much time is left.

Materials and making

The slate coasters are natural stone — each one slightly different in texture and tone, because no two pieces of slate are identical. The surface is sealed to resist everyday moisture, but the raw stone edge is left natural, giving each piece an organic quality that printed coasters cannot replicate. We finish the slate coasters with food-grade mineral oil so it could last longer. The cork coasters are made from natural compressed cork, thick enough to protect surfaces and warm to the touch. All engraving is laser-cut directly into the material — into the stone or cork itself — so the words will not fade, peel, or wash away.

Size

The round slate and cork coasters are approximately 10 cm (4″) in diameter — standard coaster size, fitting comfortably under a mug, a wine glass, or a small vase. The square slate coasters are approximately 10 × 10 cm. When propped on the basswood easel, the coaster stands approximately 11 cm tall — about the height of a standard tea light holder — and faces forward cleanly on a shelf or windowsill.

Slate: wipe with a damp cloth and dry promptly — avoid prolonged soaking or dishwashers. Cork: wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth only — do not soak, as sustained moisture will warp the cork over time. Both materials are sealed and designed for everyday use, but a little care keeps them looking their best.

Questions about this piece

Can I use this as an actual coaster, or is it just for display?
Both. The slate and cork coasters are made for everyday use — they protect surfaces and are sealed for moisture resistance. Coaster with easel can also be propped upright as a display piece. Many customers do both: use it on a coffee table or desk where the quote stays visible every day.

What does “recessed-edge” mean for the cork coaster?
Cork has two natural surfaces, both have the same texture. The recessed-edge looks like a holder for medium mug, it may not fit larger mug. Both accept the laser engraving clearly. If you are unsure, tell us and we will recommend the better side for your portrait.

Can I choose a quote that is not in the five options?
Yes. Select “Custom message” at checkout and include your exact wording in custom message box. Shorter messages — roughly one to three lines — engrave most clearly at coaster scale. We will send you a layout preview before we begin if your message is longer.

Which material should I choose — slate or cork?
Slate is heavier, darker, and more formal in feel — it suits a mantle, side table, or permanent shelf display. Cork is warmer, lighter, and more casual — it works well on a desk, a kitchen counter, or beside a favourite chair. Coaster with easel is the right choice if you want the piece to stand upright and be seen without needing to be in use.

Is the easel included, or do I need to order it separately?
The easel is an add-on option, you can add it before you add the product into the cart. The easel is basswood — lightweight and sized to hold the coaster stably at a reading angle.
