Buy Canadian Pet Memorial: Why a Local Maker Makes All the Difference

If you’ve ever tried to buy Canadian pet memorial keepsakes online and ended up on an American Etsy shop, this post is for you. Something happened that I think a lot of Canadians have run into.
You’re looking for the right thing to send a friend who just lost their dog. You find it on Etsy — a beautiful, personalized shadow box, exactly the kind of handmade piece that says I see what you’ve lost without trying to fix it. You click through. You read the listing. The seller is in Georgia. Shipping is $26 USD to Canada. Estimated delivery is three to four weeks. And at the bottom, a small note: import duties and taxes are the buyer’s responsibility upon delivery.
You sit with that for a moment. You do the maths. The package might clear customs in a week, or it might sit in a facility in Toronto for another ten days. A customs fee — another fifteen or twenty dollars — might greet your friend at the door. And the window you wanted to reach — those first tender, suspended weeks of grief when a gesture arrives into the sharpest part of the loss — might already have passed by the time it gets there.
You close the tab. You’re not sure what to do next.
I built Coffee & Cookie Design partly because of that problem. And I want to tell you why buying from a Canadian maker — for this particular kind of gift — is worth seeking out.
What “Buying Canadian” Actually Means Here
I want to be honest about what I mean when I say buy Canadian, because the phrase can mean different things.
Some things labelled “made in Canada” are assembled here from components manufactured elsewhere, by companies of significant size, in facilities you’ll never see. That’s a perfectly reasonable supply chain for plenty of products. But it’s not what I’m describing.
When I say buy Canadian pet memorial pieces, I mean: made by hand, by a real person in a real Canadian city, using real materials, with real time spent on it. The money you send goes to that person’s household, not to a distribution centre. If something needs to be adjusted — a spelling, a date, a detail about how the portrait looks — you are talking to the person who will make the adjustment, not opening a ticket into a customer service queue.
For most purchases, this doesn’t matter much. For a memorial piece — something engraved with a name that will exist on that object for decades — it matters enormously.
Our Shop: What’s Actually Behind It
Coffee & Cookie Design is run by me and my partner Evan from a converted basement studio in our home in Calgary, Alberta. We have a laser engraver, a workbench, and two elderly cats who supervise proceedings from the sofa.

The cats are Coffee and Cookie — both fifteen, both orange tabbies, both absolutely convinced that whatever I’m doing at the workbench is less important than their immediate needs. Coffee will meow at me directly until I acknowledge her. Cookie has more dignity than that; she simply repositions herself somewhere inconvenient and waits. They are very different cats, and they are both completely right.
I started this shop because of them. Because watching them age — and loving them through it — taught me something I didn’t expect to learn: that the grief of losing a pet is real, and significant, and deserves to be honoured with something made with actual care. Not a mass-produced trinket with a generic paw print. Something made slowly, for one specific animal, with their name and their face and the years they were here.
We are not a factory. We are two people, one laser engraver, and approximately fourteen pounds of opinionated cat.
Every piece we make is made here, in Calgary. Every order is packed here. Every handwritten card is written by us. When you message our shop, you are talking to me. Our five-layer laser-engraved Shadow Box is our most complete memorial piece — a portrait, a name, their dates, and a small glass vial for fur or ashes, all made by hand in this studio.
The Practical Advantages of Buying From Us Specifically
I don’t want to oversell this, because some of it is just logistics. But logistics matter when you’re buying a sympathy gift for someone who is grieving right now.
No customs fees. When a package ships within Canada, it doesn’t cross a border. Your friend won’t open the door to a postal notice informing them they owe seventeen dollars on the keepsake someone sent to comfort them. This sounds like a small thing, and it is — until it happens.
Faster shipping. We ship via Canada Post or Chit Chats. Within Canada, that is reliably faster than international shipping, and far more predictable. What arrives in three to five business days from Calgary would take three to four weeks, minimum, from most US sellers — and that’s if the border cooperates.

A real person to contact. If the portrait doesn’t look right, you message me. If you’d like a slightly different layout, or a phrase added, or a date corrected — you message me. There is no intermediary, no automated response, no waiting to be assigned to a representative. I am the representative. This is my workbench.
Why This Particular Category of Gift Needs a Human Behind It
Most purchases don’t require this level of thought. If you’re buying a lamp or a kitchen appliance, origin matters less. The object will do its job regardless of where it came from.
A pet memorial keepsake is different. It carries a name. It carries a face. It carries the years someone was alive and the love that went into them. It is going to sit on a shelf in a grieving person’s home, possibly for the rest of their life, and it is going to say something — every time they look at it — about whether the people who made it understood what it was for.
We understand what it’s for. We understand it not because it’s our job to understand it, but because we have two elderly cats who are slowing down, and we know what the quiet dread of that feels like, and we built this shop from the inside of that feeling.
That’s why we make things one at a time, slowly, with your pet’s name and face and years, and send them with a handwritten card. Because a piece made for this purpose deserves to be made as though it matters. Because it does.
