There is a particular comfort in the image of a sleeping pet. Not gone — resting. Still breathing in the way they always did, tucked up the way they always tucked, present in the room even in the image of their stillness. This coaster was made to hold that feeling. The portrait is your pet, sleeping — with a small halo above them, and the words that say what you are not always able to.

Each coaster is laser-engraved with a sleeping portrait made from a photo you send us, set into one of two scenes: resting in soft clouds with wildflowers, or curled on a round braided cushion. Both carry your pet’s name and the years they were with you. Choose between slate and cork, with an optional basswood display easel. Made by hand in Calgary by Michelle and Evan — who have two senior cats of their own and know the particular weight of this kind of love.

Two designs, each with its own mood.

   Design — “Cloud Setting”: Your pet sleeping in a soft cloud setting with small wildflowers at the base and an angel halo above. Sparkle details throughout. Pet name in bold caps at the top. Birth year lower left, passing year lower right. “Always in Our Hearts” in gentle cursive at the bottom. Clean white engraving on dark slate — quiet, still, and complete.
   Design — “Cushion Setting”: Your pet sleeping on a round braided cushion with an angel halo and soft sparkle stars above. “Always loved” in cursive at the top. Pet name in bold caps at the centre bottom, flanked by birth year and passing year. “Never forgotten” in cursive below. Warm, close, and comforting.
2. A clear photo of your pet
   A resting or relaxed pose required. See the photo tips below. Not sure? Send it to us first and we will advise.
3. Your pet’s name — exact spelling
   Up to 10 characters. Engraved exactly as you send it.
4. Birth year and passing year
   Both years engraved as shown in the design. If you prefer no dates, tick the “Prefer Not to Put the Year” section to let us know.
5. If you ordered a cork coaster — your preferred printing side
   Cork has two sides: the flat-edge and the recessed-edge. Both engrave well. Select your preference at checkout.
6. If you ordered a slate coaster — your preferred shape
   Slate has two shapes: the round and the square. Select your preference at checkout.

Photo tips

What works best: A photo of your pet in a resting or relaxed pose — lying down, curled up, or somewhere between awake and asleep. Natural light, your pet clearly visible and separated from the background, and close enough framing that their face and body are well-defined.

If you do not have a sleeping photo: A clear portrait photo — sitting, facing the camera, relaxed — also works. We adapt the pose to fit the sleeping scene while keeping your pet’s likeness. Most customers use a photo of their pet simply being themselves, and the result is still very much them.

What to avoid: Photos in heavy shadow, against a very dark background, or taken at an angle that obscures your pet’s face. Blurry or very low-resolution images (under 800 px on either side).

Materials and making

Your photo is converted into a laser-ready sleeping portrait — fitted to the scene and adjusted for the scale and tone of engraving on cork or stone. The angel halo, sparkle details, and scene elements are all part of the template, added around your pet’s specific likeness. Everything is then laser-engraved directly into the surface — into the slate or cork itself — so the portrait, name, and years will not fade, peel, or wash away. Slate coasters are natural stone, sealed for moisture resistance; each one slightly different in texture. Cork coasters are made from natural compressed cork, warm to the touch and thick enough to protect surfaces through everyday use.

Size

The round slate and cork coasters are approximately 10 cm (4″) in diameter — standard coaster size, fitting comfortably under a mug, a wine glass, or a small vase. The square slate coasters are approximately 10 × 10 cm. When propped on the basswood easel, the slate coaster stands approximately 11 cm tall — about the height of a standard tea light holder — and faces forward cleanly on a shelf or windowsill.

Sending this to someone who has just lost their pet? The image of a sleeping animal is one of the gentlest ways to hold a loss. It does not say gone — it says resting, peaceful, still loved. We include a free handwritten gift note with every order. Leave your message at checkout and we can ship directly to your recipient with no invoice enclosed. Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can give someone is the image of their pet, at rest, with their name.

Slate: wipe with a damp cloth and dry promptly — avoid prolonged soaking or dishwashers. Cork: wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth only, as sustained moisture will warp the cork over time. Both materials are sealed and designed for everyday use alongside their engraved portraits.

Because every coaster is made to order and engraved from your pet’s photo, we are unable to accept returns or exchanges. If something arrives damaged or does not match what was agreed, please reach out within 7 days with a photo — we will always make it right. Send us a message any time before or after ordering.

Questions about this piece

Does my pet’s photo have to show them sleeping?
No — though a resting or relaxed pose does translate most naturally into the sleeping scene. Any clear photo of your pet works. We adapt the posture to fit the design while keeping their likeness. If you are unsure which photo to send, send a few and we will advise.

Is the angel halo added automatically?
Yes. The halo is part of both design templates, included at no extra cost. It does not need to appear in your source photo — we add it as part of the scene around your pet’s portrait.

Can I have just one year instead of two?
Yes. Both designs show birth year and passing year by default, but if you prefer no dates at all, just tick the “Prefer Not to Put the Year” section and we will adjust the layout before sending the proof.

Do you send a proof before engraving?
Yes, always. We send a full design preview — sleeping portrait, halo, scene, name, and years in layout — before we engrave anything. For memorial pieces, this step matters to us. Nothing is finalised until you have seen it and said yes.

Which material should I choose — slate or cork?
Cork is warmer in tone — the engraving reads as a rich warm brown on the natural surface, and it suits a kitchen counter, coffee table, or desk. Slate is cooler and more formal — the engraving appears as clean white on dark stone, with a striking contrast. Coaster with easel is the right choice if you want the piece to stand upright and stay visible on a shelf. If you are unsure, we are happy to help you choose.
